Performance Course Player of the Week (8): Andre Laycock - Austin Westlake
Great teams win games that they are supposed to win. Anytime the matchup features an opponent with a losing record the concern becomes complacency. For focused teams, elite teams, playoff teams: these games are not only won, but dominated. As the Chaparrals’ of Westlake High School entered last Friday night’s district 14-6A matchup verse the Hays Rebels, they seized their opportunity to display dominance. Behind a sophomore quarterback who has been sensational this year, the Chaps offense exploded early and often. As often has been the case this year, a different name, however, surfaced and stole the show: senior wide receiver Andrew Laycock. The senior only needed 7 touches on the night to show why he gave the Rebels defensive coaching staff sleepless nights throughout the week as he turned them into 160 yards and 2 touchdowns. Both touchdowns were of the 30 yard variety as Laycock’s speed and allusiveness simply cannot be defended. As if that wasn’t enough damage, he torched the secondary for catches of 42 and 38 yards to set up two other Westlake touchdowns. Not only has Andrew provided big playmaking ability this year, but his senior leadership is described by one of his coaches as “a consistent strength for the Chaps”. This summer at PC, Andrew displayed that consistency by attending nearly every session. He led daily by example and caught his coach’s eye by giving great effort day in and day out. His Performance Course coach calls him a “coachable player who has very high character”. Every team needs a leader, but when your senior leader also can provide you with on field production, that is the total package, a coach’s dream. For his consistent leadership and effort both during the summer and the season to accompany his dominating offensive performance, Andrew Laycock is the Performance Course Player of the Week. Congrats Andrew!
