Performance Course Player of the Week (7): Walter Dawn Jr. – Mesquite Poteet
Two teams entered the clash for the top spot in District 12-5A unbeaten last Friday night, only one would leave. The Jackrabbits of Forney High School brought in an unblemished 5-0 record to square off against the No. 4 ranked Mesquite Poteet Pirates; the winner leaves with an all but locked up district championship. As to be expected, this battle for district perfection was neck and neck throughout, no team pulling away from the other. The difference came down to one simple fact: One team had junior wide receiver Walter Dawn Jr. and the other didn’t. Lucky for the Pirates, the aforementioned team, Dawn Jr. was wearing the colors green and white as he scorched the Forney defense repeatedly. The remedy for the Jackrabbits? Play a team that doesn’t have Walter, wash, and then repeat. The often overlooked 5’8 receiver was anything but as he racked up 141 yards on 5 receptions and cashed those touches in for 2 scores. As if that wasn’t enough, the junior receiver also rushed the ball 16 times for 102 yards and another touchdown. When the dust settled, 243 yards of total offense and 3 touchdowns was Dawn Jr.’s contribution as Mesquite Poteet was able to knock off Forney, stay undefeated and atop the district standings. Walter’s success comes at no shock to us here at Performance Course as he worked tirelessly to hone his craft this past summer. His PC coaches call him the “hardest working, most positive guy on the team.” They refer to him as relentless, a guy that does not have the word “complacent” in his vocabulary. For his outstanding work ethic and awesome example in the summer to go along with his performance, Walter Dawn Jr. is the Performance Course Player of the Week. Congrats Walter!
